Capcom Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay

Capcom releases Monster Hunter Wilds next year, with fans catching glimpses of it at May’s State of Play and last week’s Summer Game Fest. Director Yuya Tokuda, joined by Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto and Executive Director Kaname Fujioka, talked more about it in a recent interview. Tokuda discussed Monster Hunter Wild’s gameplay, including the new Focus Mode and wounds mechanics.

What makes Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay different?

Wounds and Focus Mode are two new features introduced to Monster Hunter Wilds’ gameplay and the systems go hand in hand. As Tokuda explained to the PlayStation Blog, “Attacking the monster naturally causes damage or wounds to happen. As long as you’re attacking the wounds, you’ll be doing more damage to the monster.” Entering focus mode highlights wounds and unlocks abilities that do bonus damage to wounds.

However, Focus Mode does a lot more than that. “The real merit of Focus Mode,” said Tokuda, “is to help players in their positioning and their distancing from monsters, so that even players who are maybe not as experienced with action games, or games similar to Monster Hunter, have an easier time honing in their attacks.”

Earlier in the interview, Tokuda said a few words about the effects of the environments on Monster Hunter Wilds’ gameplay. “One of the big things about Wilds is that the environments themselves are so much more dynamic and adaptable,” he said. “Things are changing so often, and even the monsters that are available to hunt can change moment to moment.” Capcom wants players to be able to respond to these dynamic changes. This is why, unlike in previous games, Monster Hunter Wilds players can switch between weapons during gameplay.

Another change with Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay is making monsters easier to reach, something some players had trouble with in previous games. Capcom also hopes the new Seikret mounts will make navigation a bit easier.

As the Monster Hunter franchise enters its 20th anniversary year, Monster Hunter World solidifies its place as the best-selling entry.

Monster Hunter World is King of the Monsters

Capcom revealed that combined physical and digital sales of all versions of Monster Hunter World, including Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Master Edition, have seen the popular entry pass the 25 million mark.

It was already Capcom’s best-selling title of all time, ahead of stablemate Monster Hunter Rise.

The series as a whole has racked up 97 million sales as of December 2023. it’s Capcom’s second most successful series behind Resident Evil, which has 154 million unit sales at this time. Street Fighter sits third on 53 million.

Capcom put out an official statement on the landmark achievement

”Celebrating its 20th anniversary in March 2024, the Monster Hunter series consists of hunting action games that pit players against giant monsters in beautiful natural environments. Beginning with the first title in 2004, the series established a new genre in which players cooperate to hunt ferocious monsters with their friends and has since grown into a global phenomenon, with cumulative sales of the series exceeding 97 million units as of December 31, 2023.

With Monster Hunter: World, Capcom drove the Monster Hunter series to global-brand status with a series-first worldwide simultaneous launch and international promotional activities, establishing the game as Capcom’s best-selling title of all time within a month of its release. In the six years since the game’s launch, Capcom has continued to promote digital sales, leading Monster Hunter: World to achieve a new Capcom all-time-record of 25 million cumulative units sold. Further, in December of last year Capcom revealed Monster Hunter Wilds, garnering broad attention with the announcement that the latest title in the series is scheduled for release in 2025.

Capcom remains firmly committed to satisfying the expectations of all users by leveraging its industry-leading game development capabilities in order to create highly entertaining gameplay experiences.”

Exoprimal, Monster Hunter Crossover Announced With Roadmap

Exoprimal is just a few days from release, but Capcom has laid out what the next few months will look like for the cooperative shooter. The company detailed some of its upcoming free updates, as well as a future Monster Hunter crossover.

The Exoprimal roadmap goes until Season 3

Exoprimal, Monster Hunter Crossover Announced With Roadmap

Capcom spoke more about Exoprimal’s post-launch roadmap in a recent showcase. Director Takuro Hiraoka talked about the short-term goals for the game first. It will have a new mode at launch that skips the PvP brawl at the end and only scores the teams based on who completed the missions the fastest. Story progress won’t be impacted, but picking the random option that with drop players into PvP or PvP-free matches will get more experience. This was a direct result of player feedback, as some didn’t like to directly fight other humans at the climax of each mission.

Exoprimal’s seasons will be three months long and come with a title update that has new content and another battle pass. A new Savage Gauntlet mode will arrive on July 28, two weeks after Season 1 kicks off. Savage Gauntlet is a challenging weekly PvE mode where five-player teams complete limited-time missions to earn rewards.

The first title update will go live on August 16 and feature 10 Alpha variants of each of the existing suits. These variants have new abilities, weapons, and yield more variety. Season 2 kicks off in mid-October and will have the previously announced Street Fighter 6 crossover, in addition to new rigs and modules, another map, a new final mission, and more.

Season 3 is starting in January 2024 and will introduce Beta variants of every suit and another enemy called the Neo Triceratops, which has multiple horns and calls the “Tri” part of “Triceratops” into question. This season will also introduce a Monster Hunter crossover, but Capcom didn’t divulge any details about it. More information is coming later on, though. It still didn’t tease any Dino Crisis crossovers, however, which players have been consistently asking for.

New Monster Hunter Game Trademarked, Could Be Tied to PSP Spin-off

Capcom has filed trademarks for a Monster Hunter Puzzles game, potentially hinting at a remastered version of an old PSP-era Monster Hunter title.

What is the new Monster Hunter game trademark?

According to Gematsu, Capcom recently filed trademarks for “Monster Hunter Puzzles: Felyne Isles” in the United States, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. While nothing’s official yet, there’s been at least one puzzle-themed Monster Hunter game in the past — Airu de Puzzle, which was released in 2012 on the PSP.

Airu de Puzzle was a colorful Match-3 game and featured a story with various characters from the franchise at a puzzle festival. Worth noting is that the game featured a ton of feline characters. This has led some to believe that Monster Hunter Puzzles: Felyne Isles could be a localized, remastered version of the PSP game. It’s a safe bet, especially with Capcom’s remaster-heavy kick over the past few years.

Whether or not the game will release in North America — or in what form it will eventually be announced in — is still a puzzle in and of itself. For now, the original Airu de Puzzle is still very available. If you’re interested, you can buy the PSP game now from Play Asia for under $20 USD.

Monster Hunter Energy Drink Trademark

Monster Energy is going after Monster Hunter for having the word “Monster” in its name. The Monster Energy brand, known for its energy drinks and for being a sponsor for events throughout the gaming industry, has started a trademark fight with Capcom. In fact, this isn’t the only time that the company has gone after other publishers and developers for daring to put the word “Monster” in its game names.

Monster Energy had Ubisoft change the name of a game in the past

As reported by Automaton Media in Japan, the rights holder of Monster Energy has filed trademark registration objections to Monster Hunter and even Pokemon, because it says that its brand would be confused with them.

This all seems very silly and frivolous, but Monster Energy successfully had Ubisoft change the game previously known as Gods and Monsters to now Immortals Fenyx Rising. So the consequences are quite real.

Fortunately, the Japan Patent Office isn’t having any of this, and has stated that “there is no risk of causing confusion as to the origin of the product.”

I mean, I’m not sure Monster Energy really wants to open this can of worms any further, because by the same logic, Nintendo and Capcom could argue that it’s Monster Energy that is causing the confusion here. Or perhaps any company with “Energy” in its name could go after them too. At any rate, this doesn’t exactly make me want to drink anything from Monster Energy (not that I would anyway).

It was confirmed that Monster Hunter Rise will not have a physical release on PS5 and PS4, and Capcom has released a RE4 Remake parody anime.

Monster Hunter Rise is finally headed to more consoles beyond the humble Nintendo Switch, after nearly two years of console exclusivity there. With new maps, monsters, gear, and even some new traversal methods available, this is an ambitious entry in the long-running franchise. The time certainly feels right to set about in a new land during this New Year season.

Not the prettiest monster

Monster Hunter Rise originally released on the Nintendo Switch, and it shows. It’s surprising to know that the RE Engine is used here, because this looks nowhere close to the same graphical fidelity as the recent Resident Evil games.

Of course, this is a much different kind of game, but it seems not much attention was paid to giving this port a shiny current-gen coat of paint. At least load times are nearly non-existent, as missions load within just a few seconds. Adaptive triggers are also used, but beyond that, there’s not much utilization of the PS5’s unique features, which is probably expected in a port.

While Monster Hunter Rise does allow for co-op with up to four players, the entire game can be played through solo. The missions designed for squads are at a higher difficulty level than regular missions, however, so often times it is best to take a friend or three along to complete these. There is a story, though it’s rather light fare, and the main campaign should take most hunters around 20 hours to complete. Advancing major plot points usually occurs by completing so-called Urgent missions, which despite such a label can be completed whenever you are able/ready to.

A couple of standout features make their debut in Monster Hunter Rise. First up are two new methods of traversal: Wirebugs and Palamutes. Wirebugs are these white insects that the player can utilize kind of like Spider-Man’s web slinging ability, however by default only two are active and need a cooldown after use. Players can find extras throughout the landscape, which can be helpful especially against boss monsters.

Palamutes, meanwhile, are a canine-like species of companion animals that will fight alongside you much like the cat-like Palico species. Unlike those felines, though, Palamutes can be mounted and ridden like a small horse. This allows for quickly moving about the area while using none of the player’s stamina. Considering the larger size of most of Rise’s maps, this feature is appreciated. You can also attack while on this animal, though the attacks are limited in order to encourage more traditional combat.

What’re ya crafting?

Speaking of combat, Monster Hunter Rise excels in giving players a plethora of gear options. There are fourteen different types of weapons, for starters, from swords and spears to bows and something called an insect glaive. While all weapons can interface with these insects in some fashion, the insect glaive uses special beetle-looking Kinsects, which opens up a more airborne-centric fighting style. It’s easy to play with this weapon, but to play well with it will require some dedication.

Weapons and armor can be crafted for players and companions alike. Oftentimes, you’ll need parts from larger monsters in order to craft newer and better stuff. A large weapon tree shows off dozens of options, along with the path to create some of the game’s most powerful weapons. There is a grind in this part of Rise, but then that’s something anyone playing any Monster Hunter game should expect at this point.

The core game loop in Rise is pretty simple, but since it has worked so well in the past, why fix what ain’t broke? You start out as a freshly-minted hunter at the guild for the Kamura village, with low-level everything. After a few successful hunts, you can use the loot dropped from monsters to craft better and better gear until you’re taking on massive beasts with relative ease, all the while accompanied by some combination of friends and companions. While the map may change, the gameplay does not, and as such, it can feel a little repetitive at times.

Rampage Against the Monsters

That’s where Rise’s new game mode, Rampage, comes in to break up the monotony. Early on in the campaign, the player will unlock the ability to go out on Rampage missions. Something called the Calamity is raging on outside the safety of Kamura village, and the player can choose to help out the cause by defending the gates of the town from an encroaching horde of monsters.

Rampage is essentially a real-time tower defense mode, where the player can set up various stations along a path that monsters will take. Some of these stations can be manned by NPCs, controlled by the player, or spawn a super-powerful character from the story to help out for a while. Rampage is perfect to play when you’re tired of traditional hunts but still want to keep playing Monster Hunter.

You should also expect to spend a not insignificant amount of time managing inventory. With dozens of different resources to manage (and even two currencies to earn) and a limited inventory, oftentimes the most important work you’ll do is preparing your loadout for the next mission. Will you use one of your precious bag slots for a trap, knowing you can only carry one of that type? Or will you use that slot for more healing items, since you’re going on an Urgent, tough mission? The choice is yours and usually boils down to how you play.

Kinda slow to the draw…

Monster Hunter Rise can be played in almost any style. There are plenty of melee weapons, but also some longer-ranged options such as bowguns for those who don’t like to be so easily smacked around. Rise can be a little frustrating as most animations cannot be interrupted while fighting, and for all but a few weapons fighting is a slow affair. Even drinking healing potions feels like it takes a little too long, though perhaps this is by design as you have to time your healing and be away from any danger so as to not interrupt your drinking animation.

Monster Hunter Rise is a solid RPG that will require dedication to conquer. Once you figure out your play style and get comfortable with the game’s many systems, it’s fun to gear up, grab some food, and proceed to take on as many missions as you have the time for. Combat may feel sluggish, and there are certainly better-looking games out there. But few games let you mount a canine into battle against a dragon, while your feline companion grows a healing fruit tree in the midst of all the chaos. If for nothing else, play Monster Hunter Rise for the fun of doing just that.

Monster Hunter Rise PS5 release date leaks ahead of official announcement

The Monster Hunter Rise PS5 release date of January 20, 2023 has leaked ahead of an official announcement.

According to “The Snitch,” (via Insider Gaming) a prominent leaker who has proven to be very accurate in the past, Monster Hunter Rise will be coming to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One on January 20.

Rumors suggest that the game’s official release date announcement is scheduled for The Game Awards, taking place on December 8.

While release dates can and have changed moments before an official reveal, for now it seems very likely that Monster Hunter Rise’s PlayStation launch is happening on January 20, 2023.
