Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP Trailer Release Date

Dragami Games has unveiled a new Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP trailer and a release date for the cult classic’s remaster.

Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP will be released digitally on September 25, 2024 on PS5.

Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP is a remake of the original Lollipop Chainsaw (2012), on which Yoshimi Yasuda lead development as producer. RePOP is a definitive version of the game which leaves the story unchanged, with the focus on quality-of-life improvements and additional gameplay content.

Watch Juliet, a descendant of zombie hunters, as she fights alongside her boyfriend and family to stop a zombie apocalypse starting in her high school in “Juliet’s 18th Birthday.”

Watch the Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP trailer below.

Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP will also release a physical edition worldwide. Further details are to be announced at a later date.

Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP Quality of Life Improvements

  • The game’s resolution has been increased to full HD, and load times have been greatly shortened.
  • The chainsaw action has been sped up with the introduction of the Chained Hits Hunting system, in which chaining multiple hits in succession increases the player’s attack speed.
  • The input timings for Combo Actions have been adjusted, to better fit players’ expectations.
  • Chainsaw Blaster action has been improved with the addition of auto-lock and auto-fire modes that can be toggled. And an increased maximum ammo count of 99.
  • The player can now immediately use Combo Actions at the start of the game.

Additional Gameplay Content

  • Separate from Original Mode, RePOP adds “RePOP mode,” which uses a unique and colorful pop art-inspired art style for damage effects.
  • Unique new chainsaws with distinctly different features have been added.
  • There are 30 costumes, more than the original game’s costume count. Combined with the addition of 4 new hair colors and 4 new chainsaws, this adds up to 750 different possible combinations.
  • Juliet’s Room has been expanded with more features.
  • A “Time Attack” mode with ranking feature has been added.

Dragami Games has revealed that it has changed the direction of Lollipop Chainsaw Repop with a switch from creating a remake to a remaster instead.

Back to the original flavor

The developer says it has made the decision based on fan feedback, but studio founder Yoshimi Yasuda did not clarify what that change entails. Perhaps a restarted project or just tweaking what it has to feel closer to the original game.

Earlier this year, Dragami Games pushed the game out of its 2023 release window and into the Summer of 2024. So, there’s a possibility the two announcements are connected.

Last year, Yasuda addressed fan concerns about how much was being changed and left out of the proposed remake, with original creators Suda 51 and James Gunn being absent this time around and much of the soundtrack out of the licensing agreement.

Interestingly, Yasuda said then that while it would be ideal to remaster the original, such issues made it difficult.

“Of course, the ideal thing to do would be to make a remastered version of the original game, changing nothing.

“However, we were unfortunately unable to include 16 of the licensed songs, which were a great part of the original game’s feel, and so we are instead aiming for a remake that is as close as possible to a remaster.”

The original Lollipop Chainsaw came out on PS3 in 2012, and featured the combined talents of Suda 51 and James Gunn in its development. The hack n’ slash adventure sees high schooler Juliet Starling, a zombie-killing machine, investigating a fresh zombie outbreak and carving up the undead with a chainsaw.

Dragami Games has announced the Lollipop Chainsaw remake release date has been pushed out of 2023.

The game will now shift to a Summer 2024 release window and it’s been retitled Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP. The decision has been made to get the best possible version of the game to fans.

In a statement, Dragami Games had this to say,

“Although development of RePOP was carried out with the intention of a 2023 release, our commitment to providing the best possible quality experience to our players led us to making the hard decision to extend the development period in order to ensure this,” Dragami Games said in a press release.

“We sincerely apologize to all who had been waiting for the latest installment in the Lollipop Chainsaw series, and kindly ask for your understanding in this matter.”

Lollipop Chainsaw Revs Up For 2024

The original release window had been a vague one of 2023. So there’s a little less disappointment in that I suppose.

Lollipop Chainsaw PS5 Remake

Producer Yoshimi Yasuda has hinted that a Lollipop Chainsaw PS5 remake is in development. Through a tweet on his official account, he confirms that a remake for the game will release in 2023 and that it will have “a more realistic approach to the graphics” now that the team has “access to consoles with higher specifications.”

What platforms the Lollipop Chainsaw Remake could be on

Earlier today, Yasuda shared a long statement on Twitter in both English and Japanese on the reasoning behind the remake of Suda51’s cute zombie slasher Lollipop Chainsaw. He regrets that “various factors resulted in things making it so that fans can no longer easily play Lollipop Chainsaw” on current consoles, as the original game was released on PS3 and Xbox 360 in June 2012. This is why Yasuda’s Dragami Games purchased the Lollipop Chainsaw IP from Kadokawa Games and “decided to develop a remake.”

Yasuda is particularly excited to rework the game on current-gen consoles:

Additionally, since we have access to consoles with higher specifications, we will be taking a more realistic approach to the graphics this time.

It’s still unconfirmed whether this means that a Lollipop Chainsaw PS5 remake is planned alongside PC, Xbox Series, and/or Switch versions, or if it will only be available for PS4 and Xbox One. But the PS5 remake seems highly plausible given the intent to develop the game on modern consoles and the implied goal of having more people be able to access the game in the future.

Yasuda’s announcement also confirms that Warner Bros. will be supporting Dragami Games, though it’s unclear if Warner Bros. is providing support as a publisher or developer (or both). While the original staff on the game will be working on the remake, some portion of the fifteen licensed songs in the original soundtrack will be replaced with new music.

In other news, Sony has patented an interesting gameplay replay system that presents “What If” scenarios, and a YouTuber has showcased an early PS3 devkit and a Vita prototype.

Suda 51, the man behind such games as Lollipop Chainsaw and Shadows of the Damned, is quite well known for creating experiences that steer clear of the mainstream. With his upcoming game, Killer is Dead, he will continue that streak, as you can find out in Cameron’s preview of the game and the ESRB rating.

As we approach the PS4 and Xbox One launches (just a few months away!), Suda discussed what will define Grasshopper Manufacture in the next generation to Edge by saying, “What I really want to push and emphasize at Grasshopper is not which platform we choose, but which kind of engine we choose.” He then continued by talking about how Killer is Dead is being done on Unreal Engine 3, “but moving forward this is probably the last Unreal 3 game we’ll develop before we explore Unreal 4 and a variety of other engines, and see which will allow us to do what we want.”

If you thought Suda pretty much confirmed that they’ll be working on a multi-platform game next generation, rather than doing a console exclusive, he further added to that when asked if either the PS4 or Xbox One had a specific advantage for the games he wants to make:

I wouldn’t really want to restrict ourselves to a single platform, and of course the engines will have support for multiple platforms… I feel there’s a sort of desire from players to see games on multiple platforms, in a variety of packages, in a variety of different forms. So we really want to tax the engines in this next generation. The platforms will be pulled along by the engines, I want to say.

So, barring any changes, expect to be able to buy Grasshopper Manufacture’s next crazy project on both the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 whenever they think it up and release it.

Are you going to have time and/or money for Killer is Dead when it launches in a month? Let us know in the comments below.

]]>

When I first got my hands on Lollipop Chainsaw at PAX Prime last year, I was excited by my brief playthrough and the possibilities of this crazy world created by Suda51. That excitement quickly faded, though, as I delved into the full game for this review…

Lollipop Chainsaw doesn’t beat around the bush. The first five minutes after you start the game, you will experience a shower scene, a sexy cheerleader, and a lot of evil zombies. This is what most of the game is all about, as you are pushed constantly through the story to your next combat sequence. In fact, much of the game relies on quick, one-line jokes to pass the time between slaying zombies. Like much of the game, it works to a point, but most of the jokes and dialog fail to deliver and grow upon the experience.

You star as Juliet Starling, a normal, busty high school cheerleader who moonlights as a certified zombie hunter in her off time. Not just Juliet, but her entire family is filled with exotic zombie hunters, but you won’t have to worry too much about backstory, as there isn’t any. Just know that there are zombies to kill and you just happen to be there with your trusty chainsaw to do it. If that was not enough, your boyfriend-turned-hip decoration is there to add some actual comedy relief to the game; which for some reason is sorely lacking. In fact, for a Suda51 game, it is surprising just how terrible the dialog is and how few times it actually makes you laugh.

Adding to the rather lackluster jokes and story, the dialogue in the game is atrocious and the voice acting doesn’t help. Juliet’s sister Rosalind was the worst decision ever made, turning a whole level silent as the best course of action is to mute your TV instead of listen to her laugh the entire time. None of the other characters really provide anything special and almost all of the bosses are equally annoying.

Now that we have all those elements of the story and characters out of the way, we can dig into the gameplay aspect of the game; which is what it’s all about, right? Sadly, the core of the combat falls extremely short. Juliet has a low and high attack for her chainsaw and an attack with her pom-poms. The idea here is the stun the zombies with your pom-poms and then decapitate them with your chainsaw. You can also just deal them enough damage and finally take their head off. Line up at least three zombies in a row and decapitate them all at once to receive a “Sparkle Hunting” reward. Problem is, it is extremely difficult to get this, as zombies will disrupt your attacks more often than not and it takes a while to get their health down enough to take off their head. It makes it worse when you finally do a sparkle hunting on accident, because every time you do it, you are greeted with a splash screen telling you that you succeeded and how much money you are getting. If you have a fight and happen to do this multiple times, it really takes away from the combat as it goes to this splash screen every damn time.

Making matters worse, the combat gets extremely repetitive and the moves that you can purchase with coins collected throughout the game don’t really grow your arsenal of attacks, leaving you to button mashing and frustration. Also adding to this negativity is the fact that the camera angles are horrendous. I found myself constantly fighting the camera more than I was the zombies on-screen. All these negatives really take a unique and fun looking experience and lets you down, turning an already powerful zombie hunter who killed her first one as a baby, into Buffy before she found out her powers. Combos and strength upgrades never feel like upgrades. Later levels really showcase this, as longer combos are almost always interrupted, and shorter ones make an extremely small dent in the more powerful zombies.

Boss battles attempt to break things up, as do modes where you dash through the world performing jumps; or another where you must save citizen’s from hordes of zombies. These don’t do enough to make a difference, and overall are extremely disappointing. In fact, these “boss” battles are extremely easy and never made me break a sweat, even on the hard difficulty. Lollipop Chainwsaw is full of combat elements that could be cool, but don’t feel finished. The worst offender of this is possibly your decapitated head of a boyfriend, whose attempt to help in combat is laughable and rather useless.

The presentation front is where this game really shines, with sparkle attacks, some solid looking enemies, and character models. The soundtrack is full of some great hits from bands such as MSTRKRFT, Joan Jett, and DragonForce. Checking out the store to buy items and having Lollipop by the Chordettes playing in the background is just solid gold.

When the smoke has cleared and you have completed the game in under five hours, you will most likely have a fairly mixed amount of emotions. You can see where Grasshopper Manufacture was going with this game and you see the potential, but around every turn there is more to find wrong with this game. You can forgive the shoddy dialogue and lame jokes as that is what they were going for, but you cannot forgive rather boring combat, a short game, and absolutely zero replay value. Is this a good game to rent for a weekend and enjoy, sure. It is not, however, a game that you will want to head down and purchase at full retail price, because you will be sorely disappointed by all the ‘what ifs’ that plague this title.

PlayStation LifeStyle’s Final Score

+Great music and interesting flair to the presentation

-Combat does very little to help the game along

-Short game; about as bad as the lame jokes

5 out of 10

Goichi Suda is a busy man these days, working on titles like Lollipop Chainsaw and Black Knight Sword, but while the ideas mostly come from him, his role with each game varies depending on the project. At the Tokyo Game Show, Suda explained his many different roles at the studio.

Suda told 1UP that for Lollipop Chainsaw, the idea was his and he is the executive director for the game. With Diabolical Pitch and Black Knight Sword, he came up with the idea but turned the games over to different teams, but stays around to offer as much feedback as possible. Sine Mora on the other hand, was an idea by Digital Reality that Suda also offers feedback for.

Suda had the following to say:

Black Knight Story’s original concept is reflected pretty heavily [in the final game]. I had this vision where the main character is a guy who hangs himself trying to die, but he can’t die and he actually gets possessed by this spiritual thing. So I actually wanted him to explore the world to find the three rarest foods in the world, but that doesn’t happen in the game. That was resisted strongly by the director…so that didn’t happen, but other than that, it’s pretty close to the original concept.

Diabolical Pitch, I think it’s kept pretty close to the original idea. You know Randy Johnson, right? I really like him. I originally wanted Randy Johnson to do the motion capture, and I also wanted to put this pitching style that [a legendary Japanese pitcher] had, but that didn’t really happen. But other than that, I think we’re pretty close to the original concept.

Grasshopper currently houses 120 employees and, while they may not wear the amount of hats that Suda does, they are all very important to the success of the developer’s games.

Suda51 and Grasshopper Manufacture are quickly becoming known for creating games with unique visual and comic styles, such as Shadows of the Damned and No More Heroes. The latest game to follow in that vein is Lollipop Chainsaw, and we got some hands on with the game at the Warner Bros. PAX booth.

Lollipop Chainsaw puts players in the cheerleading shoes of Juliet Starling, a highschool cheerleader who does a little bit of zombie hunting on the side. Fortunately, she doesn’t have to go too far as zombies have infested her old school and she must now fight to save her classmates from the undead.

Our demo placed us inside one of the hallways of San Romero High School, as the zombie outbreak has begun to engulf the school. In the game, your player will have 3 attacks to choose from; heavy and light chainsaw attacks, and an attack with her pom-poms. The cheer attack is used in the game to push and group together your zombies, allowing you to use your chainsaw attack to decapitate the zombies. The goal here is to try to take off as many heads as possible in one swing, gaining you bonus points. You also have a dodge at your disposal which will help you quickly back away from zombies or leapfrog over their heads, allowing for a quick chainsaw to the private regions. A power up can be attained, making Juliet invincible, if you collect stars throughout the game.

All of this combat flows great, as you move from dodging to attacking, without any real hiccups, though the camera angle can fight you a bit from time to time. In the playthrough, we encountered three different levels of zombies. First was the basic school student turned zombie, which were slow but attacked in groups, a nice change of pace from some games where enemies attack one at a time. The second zombie was a mini boss, which is this demo was a teacher. These zombies are a bit more powerful and take some planning to beat. The last one is of course a boss, which we encountered at the end of the demo. Here the combat branched out and began to use more quick time events and more strategy than past fights. Now the quick time events fit in well with the rest of the gameplay, so don’t be worried about out-of-place QTEs. There are also kids around the school that we had a chance to save. When we succeeded, money was given to us; however when we failed and they were turned, they came back stronger than the normal zombies, hell bent on revenge.

Visually things looked impressive, with the zombies, Juliet, and the environments looking solid. The flare from combat, with pink all over the place instead of blood, was a nice touch and made this unlike the rest of the zombie games on the market. The voices of the characters were well done, though I could see Juliet becoming a bit annoying. The signature Suda51 humor was there in full force, with some quick wit and well told jokes. Add in a busty cheerleader who makes some anime chicks jealous, and there are some great opportunities for plenty of humor.

Lollipop Chainsaw is a game that some people might shy away from because of its humor or main character, but early returns from our playthrough are very promising, with lots of potential in this title. Time will tell if this potential is reached when the final product releases some time next year.

After revealing his latest twisted title several weeks ago, Suda51 of Grasshopper Manufacture has released a fresh batch of screenshots for the upcoming Lollipop Chainsaw. Pitting a high school cheerleader against an onslaught of zombies is incredibly unique, though incredibly weird as well. But hey, that’s Suda for you.

Gamers will play as chainsaw wielding Juliet Starling who runs around the halls of her high school garbed in a cheerleading outfit tasked with mowing down zombies. The development team isn’t going light on the gore either, as the game is filled with plenty of brutal violence, including decapitation, dismemberment and plenty of blood.

If you haven’t already gotten a chance to check out the game’s official trailer, stop what you’re doing and head over here to check it out. In addition we’ve added a slew of new images to our gallery, which can be viewed below. Lollipop Chainsaw will arrive sometime next year.
