Over the weekend, images and gameplay footage purportedly from a very early build of Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 leaked online. The ongoing Insomniac Games leaks all result from the same ransomware attack that took place in December 2023, with Sony struggling to take them down.

Alleged Spider-Man 3 gameplay leak reveals a new protagonist

We’re not going to directly paste the leaks here (they can be found on Reddit and X), but we will briefly discuss the information that we’ve gathered from them, so those worried about spoilers should proceed with caution.

The images purportedly from Spider-Man 3 show Cindy Moon/Silk swinging around New York. Interestingly, she did make an appearance towards the end of Spider-Man 2, when Miles Morales’ mother invites her boyfriend over to dinner. Her boyfriend, Albert Moon, brings his daughter with him. Although we don’t really see her — you’ve already guessed it — it’s Cindy.

Then, there’s some gameplay footage circulating on X. To reiterate, it appears to be from a very early build with reused assets, and isn’t indicative of the final product whatsoever. Apparently, a team of Brazlian modders who made a playable PC build of Spider-Man 2 following the hack are now bringing Spider-Man 3 to life as well.

Spider-Man 3 is unlikely to release before Marvel’s Wolverine, which seems to be Insomniac’s next big project. At this point, it’s hard to say if Spider-Man 3 will be a PS5 game or a PS6 game (or both).

Insomniac Games has detailed what to expect in the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s new game plus update, including suits, gameplay tweaks, and more.

In a new post on the PlayStation Blog, Insomniac Games revealed that the upcoming update — which will officially be version 1.002 of the game — and its New Game+ mode will allow for missions to be replayed on a harder difficulty, as well as new Ultimate Levels, Golden Gadget styles, and more to be unlocked.

Outside of New Game+, new suit styles for several of Peter’s symbiote suits will be added into the game, as well as a new “Hellfire Gala” suit for both Peter and Miles (below). Players will also be able to change the time of day in the game.

A new DLC pack of suits will also be available, giving players access to the Fly N’ Fresh suits. The pack will cost $4.99, with all proceeds going to Gameheads, a charity that empowers low-income youth and youth of color to thrive in the video games industry.

Insomniac Games worked to make a quality update

Originally set to release in 2023, Insomniac Games instead delayed the release of the update to make sure it was up to par with their standard of quality.

“We have been working vigilantly on these features and require more testing to ensure the quality is up to our standards,” their statement read at the time. “We’ve heard your feedback and will be adding some highly requested features.” Insomniac said that it plans to share a complete list of new features closer to the patch’s release and thanked fans for their patience.

In other Insomniac news, the studio has reportedly been a victim of a ransomware attack, with hackers allegedly gaining access to Wolverine PS5 materials as well as employee info and secret projects. Sony has said that it’s investigating the attack.

A new report claims that the recently leaked Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man multiplayer project was indeed canceled. Among the files stolen in the recent ransomware attack on the studio was an entire presentation on a game pitched as “GTA Online meets Spider-Man.” It appears that game was among a number of Sony’s live service projects that were ultimately shelved alongside The Last of Us multiplayer.

Spider-Man multiplayer game’s cancellation report comes from a reliable source

There was speculation of Insomniac’s multiplayer project being canceled when hackers discovered a project roadmap that didn’t mention the game anywhere. Now, journalist Jason Schreier has confirmed that this is true.

In a report published on Bloomberg, Scherier claims to have spoken to people familiar with Insomniac’s plans, who told him that the Spider-Man game was “actually canceled a long time ago.” Scherier doesn’t delve any further than this.

Separately, the hack also confirmed that Resistance 4 and Sunset Overdrive 2 were also planned at one point but were ultimately canceled. While we can’t say for sure why Resistance 4 was canned, Sunset Overdrive 2 was likely shelved following Sony’s purchase of Insomniac Games. With Microsoft still holding publishing rights to the IP, it’s highly unlikely that Sony will ever greenlight the project.

The studio previously confirmed that it was working on a multiplayer game while hiring for the project but never revealed it. There’s some confusion surrounding the game’s current status.

Why fans think Insomniac’s Spider-Man multiplayer game has been canceled

Billed as “Spider-Man meets GTA Online” in an internal presentation, Insomniac planned to launch the game by 2026. But a leaked roadmap for the studio’s upcoming projects has no mention of this multiplayer game, leading many to believe it may have been canceled. It also doesn’t help that Sony’s live-service push — which was in full swing up until last year — ended up falling flat. As a result, numerous games ended up being canceled, including The Last of Us multiplayer.

We won’t share the leaked presentation and images from the Spider-Man multiplayer game here, but they’re hosted over on ResetEra and Reddit. According to the leak, the game would have received individual Marvel character-themed seasons quarterly. Each season would have come with a Battle Pass and would have lasted three months, with each month bringing a new story act. The game would have received free content as well.

Insomniac Games has released patch notes for another Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 update. The studio has addressed a litany of bugs in the new update (version 1.001.004), including a few issues where players would become stuck in the game and more.

Unlike the first two updates for the game, which introduced some bigger changes, the latest update aims to tackle more tiny glitches and errors that were causing issues for players. This includes things like one of the suits having extra eye details, models not loading properly, and more.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is out now, and it’s quickly become one of the most successful games in PlayStation Studios’ history.

According to a recent release from Sony, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 sales make it the fastest selling PlayStation Studios game ever. The game sold more than 2.5 million copies in its first 24 hours, a figure that includes pre-order sales, as well as units bundled together with the PlayStation 5 console.

Spider-Man 2 sales continue to impress

The news comes shortly after Sony announced that Spider-Man 2 had become the U.K.’s fourth biggest launch of the year in terms of physical sales. While digital sales have yet to be reported, the game seems to be a smash hit for Insomniac Games and Sony. It will likely be at or near the top of the charts when those numbers come in.

In a statement regarding the sales metric, PlayStation’s senior vice president of global marketing, sales and business operations Eric Lempel praised developer Insomniac Games.

“Insomniac Games holds itself to incredibly high standards when it comes to delivering engaging and innovative gameplay experiences,” Lempel said. “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is Insomniac Games’ third installment in the franchise for PlayStation. Insomniac Games announced on Wednesday the Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered PS5 standalone release date window and detailed what the upgrade path would be for players.

How to get Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered

The Marvel’s Spider-Man PS5 remastered standalone release is set for May 4, 2023. Previously, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered was only made available as part of the Ultimate Edition of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which was released in 2020.

Alongside news of the standalone release, Insomniac Games also detailed what the upgrade path would be like for fans who already own Marvel’s Spider-Man on PlayStation 4. Whether you have a disc or digital version of the game, the upgrade to Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered will cost $10.

Owners of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales can still get the game by upgrading to the Ultimate Edition through the main menu of the PS5 version of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. If you don’t own any previous Marvel’s Spider-Man games, the standalone remaster will be available on the PlayStation Store for $49.99 as its own game.

The original Marvel’s Spider-Man released in 2018, with the remastered version of the game including the original game and all of its downloadable content, which includes free and paid DLC, new suits, and more.

The remastered game also features a variety of new textures and performance updates, as well as changes the facial model for Peter Parker from John Bubniak to Ben Jordan, in an effort to better match the features of voice actor Yuri Lowenthal, who did the facial capture for Peter in the original game.
